Shincha Houryoku ($19.75)

JAPANESE GREEN TEA: Shincha Houryoku
Shincha Houryoku is an Eighty-Eighth (88th) Night Shincha produced with a longer steaming just like our Fukamushi-Sencha. The extra steaming causes the tea to brew a thick emerald liquid full of herbaceous flavor. Eighty-Eighth Night Shincha refers to Shincha picked on the 88th day after the first day of spring in the traditional Japanese calendar. It is around May 2nd. The Eighty-Eighth Nigh - "Hachijuhachiya" in Japanese - is a special day in Japanese agriculture since it is considered about the time all the plants and vegetation begin to sprout.
  • Origin: Makinohara, Shizuoka

FYI: Den's 2017 Shincha Houryoku Tasting Comments:
When I sipped this year's Houryoku, I thought it had a bit of a thin taste, though it had very comfortable Umami and a bit of grassy astringency. However, while I continued sipping, every taste was piled up and eventually my mouth was a full of herbaceous flavors. The 2nd cup still had nice herbaceous flavors. I also liked the slightly stronger astringency in the second cup. There is a comfortable and uncomfortable astringency that is determined by the quality of the tea. Good astringency will enhance Umami and turn into a comfortable aftertaste and 2017 Houryoku has it!
