Shincha Houryoku ($19.75)

JAPANESE GREEN TEA: Shincha Houryoku
Shincha Houryoku is an Eighty-Eighth (88th) Night Shincha produced with a longer steaming just like our Fukamushi-Sencha. The extra steaming causes the tea to brew a thick emerald liquid full of herbaceous flavor. Eighty-Eighth Night Shincha refers to Shincha picked on the 88th day after the first day of spring in the traditional Japanese calendar. It is around May 2nd. The Eighty-Eighth Nigh - "Hachijuhachiya" in Japanese - is a special day in Japanese agriculture since it is considered about the time all the plants and vegetation begin to sprout.

Den's 2019 Shincha Houryoku Tasting Comments:
Compared with Hashiri and Kunpu, Houryoku has a more varied taste profile because it is a Fukamushi Sencha and I think the deep steaming process draws out hidden tastes in the tea leaves. It has grassy, earthy, herbaceous, nutty flavors that are all the blessings from nature. This year?s Houryoku is just that. The first sip will exhibit a mild flavor but then the complex taste will be left in every corner of your mouth. While I was enjoying the dryness, a pleasant Umami evolved and then gradually disappeared. Then I repeated this delightful sip again, and the dregs. The 2nd cup was brewed with hotter water and produced another delightful cup; a fresh grassy cup without bitterness refresh my mouth and I repeated this sip again, and again... to the dregs. This year?s Houryoku is well balanced with condensed green tea flavors.
